Understanding the Mouth Body Connection: Periodontal Therapy in Glenpool, OK

April 7, 2015

185594294While it’s relatively common knowledge that gum disease causes bad breath, sensitivity, bleeding, and even tooth loss, its systemic effects are not as widely known. At Complete Cosmetic Care Dentistry in Glenpool, OK, Dr. Parnam Mohanna and Dr. Dalia Georgy offer an extensive range of preventive and family dentistry services, including periodontal therapy. Today, we’d like to discuss some of the lesser known effects of gum disease and how they impact our overall well-being.

Healthy Mouth, Healthy Body

The bacteria that cause gum disease are capable of causing damage to other tissues and organs located throughout your body. When these bacteria are allowed to enter the bloodstream through your infected gingival tissue, a variety of complications can result. In fact, untreated periodontal disease has been linked to the following health issues:

  • High blood pressure
  • Stroke
  • Heart attack
  • Diabetes
  • Blood and pancreatic cancer
  • Kidney problems
  • Rheumatoid arthritis
  • Osteoporosis
  • Dementia
  • Preterm delivery and low infant birth weight

Fortunately, keeping your gums free of infectious bacteria is as easy as keeping to a stringent home hygiene routine and visiting our office twice per year for a thorough cleaning. If you do succumb to gum disease, however, we can help manage it with periodontal therapy. In some cases, more frequent deep cleanings are all that is necessary to halt the progression of gum disease.

Sleep Better and Stop Snoring with Sleep Apnea Therapy in Glenpool, OK

March 7, 2015

494282527Is snoring keeping you awake at night or leading to long stretches spent sleeping on the sofa instead of bed? Perhaps you feel exhausted during the day, even after what should have been a restful night of deep sleep. For patients suffering from obstructive sleep apnea, snoring is actually an indication of a serious health problem in addition to a nighttime nuisance. At Complete Cosmetic Care Dentistry in Glenpool, OK, Dr. Parnam Mohanna and Dr. Dalia Georgy offer a wide range of general and preventive dentistry solutions, including sleep apnea therapy.

The Importance of Treating Sleep Apnea

In cases of sleep apnea, the airway from the mouth to the lungs is obstructed by the tongue, tissue in the throat, or the soft tissues of the palate. Breathing ceases multiple times per hour, a problem that leads to a low blood oxygen level throughout the night. The obstruction also causes the vibrating sound we know as snoring. Over time, untreated sleep apnea can contribute to a variety of serious health complications, including the following:

  • Coronary artery disease
  • Heart attack
  • Liver and kidney problems
  • Respiratory illnesses, including severe pneumonia
  • Chronic fatigue
  • Accidents behind the wheel or at work
  • Pulmonary hypertension

Fortunately, sleep apnea can be treated relatively quickly with a non-invasive solution: a custom oral appliance. This mouthguard is worn only at night and helps to keep the airways open and free from obstruction. Patients frequently report feeling better after just one night’s use.

Get the Peaceful Sleep You Need and Deserve

If you or your partner suffers from excessive snoring and obstructive sleep apnea, please don’t hesitate to contact us today to schedule a consultation with the team at Complete Cosmetic Care Dentistry. We genuinely look forward to helping you get the restful night’s sleep you need to enjoy a fulfilling, energetic life every day. Conveniently located in Glenpool, OK, our practice warmly welcomes families from throughout nearby communities in Tulsa, Okmulgee, Sapulpa, Bixby, Jenks, Mounds, Keifer, and beyond.

How Does Your Workout Affect Your Smile? Athletes and Oral Health

February 7, 2015

451855347While your teeth may not be the first things you think of as you get ready to hit the gym, a recent study provides evidence that your oral health actually should be something you consider alongside your fitness routine. At Complete Cosmetic Care Dentistry in Glenpool, OK, Dr. Parnam Mohanna and Dr. Dalia Georgy strive to provide their patients with valuable information to keep their smiles healthy and strong, and today we’d like to share the results of this study in hopes that it will benefit you.

Do Athletes Get More Cavities?

A study published in the Scandinavian Journal of Medicine and Science in Sports sought to uncover a reason for the higher incidence of cavities in athletes, particularly runners. What they found was surprising. The mouths of the athletes tested were consistently impacted by a diminished pH level, a problem that has been long linked to a higher risk for tooth decay. The lowered pH levels were attributed to a diet high in carbohydrates, primarily from sports drinks and gels as well as nutrition bars. While these are popular staples for runners and other athletes, overconsumption proved potentially harmful to oral health.

Another anomaly was found in saliva levels. Athletes tested following a strenuous workout were found to have decreased levels of saliva in their mouths, an issue that has been known to promote tooth decay and periodontal disease. Saliva is a necessary component of oral health, helping to wash away acid-producing bacteria.

While we’d never suggest that our athletic patients stop working out in favor of protecting their oral health, this study does support a more stringent hygiene routine at home. Also, as always, it is crucial to the continued health of your teeth and gums that you schedule a visit to our office for an exam and professional cleaning at least once every six months.

Healthy Mouth, Healthy Body

Exercise is a vital part of a healthy lifestyle, just as are your routine visits to our dental office. If it has been more than six months since your last visit, please contact us today to schedule your appointment with Dr. Georgy and Dr. Mohanna. Our caring, experienced staff looks forward to helping you achieve and maintain a healthy, beautiful smile for life. Conveniently located in Glenpool, OK, our practice proudly serves the surrounding areas of Tulsa, Jenks, Bixby, Okmulgee, Sapulpa, Keifer, Mounds, and beyond.

Escape the Daily Grind with Bruxism Treatment & TMJ Therapy in Glenpool, OK

January 7, 2015

178901519The temporomandibular joint is the joint responsible for connecting your lower jaw, or mandible, to your skull. Though powerful and versatile, this tiny joint is actually quite delicate and can be susceptible to inflammation due to injury, clenching of the jaw muscles, malocclusion, or teeth grinding. Involuntary grinding of the teeth, known as bruxism, can put an inordinate amount of pressure on these joints, resulting in TMJ disorder. At Complete Cosmetic Care Dentistry in Glenpool, OK, Dr. Dalia Georgy and Dr. Parnam Mohanna help patients suffering from TMD and bruxism enjoy pain-free relief and improved oral health.

Benefits of Treating Bruxism and TMJ Disorder

The symptoms that accompany a case of TMD and bruxism vary depending on the patient’s oral health history, general state of physical wellness, behaviors, and the severity of the inflammation in the temporomandibular joint. The most common symptoms of these conditions are:

  • Audible grinding of the teeth or clenching of the jaw while asleep
  • Pain and/or stiffness in the neck, shoulders, and upper back
  • Tenderness in the jaw, particularly near the temples
  • Persistent headaches
  • Teeth that are worn down to reveal the internal tooth structure within
  • Teeth that become flatter and shorter over time
  • Indentations on the sides of the tongue

Fortunately, there is a relatively simple, completely non-invasive way to treat bruxism and TMJ disorder at Complete Cosmetic Care Dentistry. With a customized oral appliance, we can help you get the relief you need while you sleep. Simply wear your comfortable nightguard – also called an oral splint – at night, and experience freedom from jaw clenching and grinding for good.

Is This a Dental Emergency? What You Need to Know

August 20, 2014

462039415By its very nature, a dental emergency is typically something that occurs unexpectedly. While you can’t necessarily prepare for an emergency situation that involves your mouth, you can equip yourself with the information and resources you’ll need should this type of problem arise. At Complete Cosmetic Care Dentistry in Sapulpa, OK, Dr. Parnam Mohanna and Dr. Dalia Georgy provide patients throughout the area with emergency dental services 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

What is Considered a Dental Emergency?

Knowing what constitutes an emergency is important, and we’re here to help you discern an urgent situation from one that can wait. Remember, we’re always here when you need us; simply call us at (918) 347-5575, remain calm, and keep the following guidelines in mind. These are considered the most common dental emergency situations:

  • Knocked out tooth – Retrieve the tooth by the crown (the part that shows when you smile) and gently rinse it in warm water, taking extreme care to avoid touching the root. Do not remove any tissue that may be attached. If possible, attempt to replace the tooth in its socket, ensuring that it is facing the proper way. If this cannot be done, place the tooth in a container or bag of milk. Water with a pinch of salt works as an alternative if you don’t have any milk on hand. We may be able to save your tooth if you visit our office in a timely manner.
  • Broken or chipped tooth – Rinse the mouth and collect any pieces of tooth you can find. If the area is bleeding, apply steady pressure to the wound with sterile gauze. A cold compress can be used to alleviate swelling and pain against the outside of the mouth.
  • Soft tissue injuries – An injury to the soft tissues of the mouth – including the gums, lips, cheeks, tongue, or palate – should be evaluated by our dentists. Rinse the area with warm, mild salt water and apply a moist gauze pad to control bleeding. Contact us if bleeding is heavy or does not subside within 15 to 20 minutes.
  • Toothache – Though a toothache may not initially seem like a dental emergency, pain in your tooth may signify the presence of an underlying condition that is quite serious, including a root infection or abscess. Rinse the mouth with warm water and attempt to remove anything lodged between the teeth with dental floss. Call us to schedule an evaluation.

If you or a loved one is experiencing a dental emergency, contact our office in Sapulpa, OK and speak to our caring, experienced staff. We look forward to serving you and exceeding your every urgent care need. Our state-of-the-art dental practice proudly serves families from throughout Sapulpa and the surrounding areas, including Tulsa, Bixby, Mounds, Jenks, Keifer, Okmulgee, Glenpool, and beyond.

Oral Cancer Screening in Sapulpa, OK: Important Information from Drs. Georgy and Mohanna

June 4, 2014

shutterstock_126406406Oral cancer is responsible for the death of approximately 8,000 men and women in America every year. Though there is no cure for this aggressive disease, early detection and treatment play vital roles in survival statistics. At Complete Cosmetic Care Dentistry in Sapulpa, OK, Dr. Dalia Georgy and Dr. Parnam Mohanna offer a variety of general dentistry treatments and procedures aimed at keeping your mouth healthy; oral cancer screening is one of them.

The Importance of Oral Cancer Screening

Because the first signs and symptoms associated with oral cancer may be undetectable without specialized screening equipment, it is incredibly important and vital to your overall health that you visit our family-friendly practice twice per year for routine general dentistry checkups. During these visits, we will take the time to assess all surfaces within the oral cavity and perform a thorough cleaning to ensure continued dental health. Though only oral cancer screening at our office can actually determine the presence of a cancerous lesion or cells, there are some things you can keep watch for at home between your visits to our office:

  • Ulcers that bleed or do not go away
  • White or reddish patches inside the mouth or on the lips
  • Lumps or thicker areas on the gums, tongue, inner cheeks, or floor or roof of the mouth
  • Pain or difficulty when speaking, swallowing, eating, or opening the mouth
  • Any unexplained sensation, such as tingling, numbness, or pain

Because many of these symptoms may indicate an issue other than oral cancer, it is vital that you have any unusual symptom assessed by our doctors. We will always take the time to explain to you anything that we may find during your screening, as well as the next steps in your treatment process.
