October Is National Dental Hygiene Month! Here’s How to Keep Your Smile Healthy All Year Round

With all the spooky decorations and showers of candy that come during the Halloween season, many people are completely unaware that October is also National Dental Hygiene Month. This is a good thing, too, because all that candy means that it’s even more important to take good care of your teeth. Here are a few tips to keep your smile beautiful for October and the rest of the year.

Your Smile Will Make Them Blush If You’re Good with Your Toothbrush

Brushing your teeth can effectively clean most of their surfaces by eliminating plaque, sugary residues, and food particles. You should brush your teeth for two minutes at least twice every day, once in the morning and once before bed. Be sure to wait for thirty minutes after eating so your mouth can naturally clean away much of the food debris. When you brush, use a soft-bristled brush, fluoride toothpaste, and gentle circular motions on the front, back, and chewing surfaces of the teeth. Be sure to brush your gums and tongue as well to eliminate bacteria.

Your Oral Hygiene Will Be at a Loss if You Don’t Floss

A cavity in between your teeth is every bit as dangerous as a cavity in the front of your tooth. For this reason, flossing is every bit as important as brushing. Flossing cleans between your teeth where a toothbrush can’t reach, removing plaque and food debris. It also stimulates blood flow to the gums, keeping them healthy and ready to fight infection. Flossing once a day is considered sufficient, and it’s best to do it before bed. If traditional floss is uncomfortable for you, you can try alternatives like floss picks or water flossers.

Mouthwash is the unsung hero of oral hygiene. It shouldn’t be thought of as an alternative to brushing or as extra dental health credit because it is actually an essential part of a proper oral hygiene regimen. After brushing and flossing remove most of the plaque and food debris, a thorough swishing with antibacterial mouthwash can kill more than 99% of the bacteria that cause tooth decay, gum disease, and bad breath. It also leaves your mouth with a fresh minty feeling that you’ll certainly enjoy.
